As one of Canada’s top racing drivers, Claude Poirier has developed and honed his talent to where he is now considered a truly qualified professional in his field. With 25 years of racing under his belt, Claude has a racing history that is rich in top five finishes, including triumphs over prominent drivers such as Tommy Kendall, Tommy Riggins, Bill Cooper, Paul Tracy, Ron Fellows and Richard Spenard.

He first began driving in Formula Ford open-wheeled racing cars at the respected Le Volant School of Racing based at Sanair Speedway near Montreal, Que., in 1982. His natural talent resulted in his nomination as the School’s Most Promising Student.

Claude advanced to the more powerful Formula 2000 series the following season, with a best finish of fifth at the Grand Prix of Granby.

The Team was equally impressive off the track, taking first prize for the best appearing car at the National Canadian Championship at Shannonville Motorsport Park.

In 1986 Claude switched to showroom stock racing, placing in the top ten on a regular basis (while racing against 70 competitors!) in the inaugural Player’s Challenge Series for Camaros and Firebirds.

His performance caught the attention of Powell Motorsport owner John Powell, who contacted Claude for his professional racing services and as a chief instructor for his Corvette High Performance Driving School. He also instructed well-known racers such as Johnny Rutherford, Jeremy Dale, R. K. Smith, Robbie Buhl, Claude Bourbonnais and Nascar’s Jeff Gordon.

Claude continued to compete in selected events in different series across North America. His best finishes included a victory and a second place in the Firestone Fire hawk Series, several top-five finishes in the Player’s Challenge and a sixth place in the Corvette Challenge event at Mosport Park. In 1990 he was a top contender in the Escort World Challenge Series driving a Powell Motorsport Corvette, and a return the following year to six Player’s/GM Motorsport races saw five top-ten finishes.

In 1993 Claude was contracted to drive a Legendary Race Car: McLaren M10-A Formula 5000 at the Zippo United States Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, NY.

The 1995 Valvoline Touring Championship resulted in a strong come back for Claude as he drove the last half of the season in one of Phil Strudwick’s Racing Camaro clinching 1 Pole Position, 3 Top Three and 2 Top Five finishes.

In 1996, Claude drove a Pontiac Firebird for Strudwick Motorsport for the first part of the season placing on the top five on a regular basis. He finished the season driving a Camaro SS for Wilhelmy racing. He found himself in a better-prepared car and the results showed with a win at Lime Rock Park and he ran up front for the remainder of the season.

The 1997 season prove the be the most dominant for Claude and his team, they lead the Driver and Team Championship point All Season as they clinched the most pole positions in the Grand Sport Class with 7 pole positions. They hold track records at several racetracks like Mosport, Shannonville, Trois-Riviere and Mt. Tremblant. The Season ended with 4 victories, 10 tops 3 finishes and 11 top 5 finish. The team finish first and second in Driver and team point Championship. They earned the respect they deserved in Road Racing and the 1998 season with a limited number of races (4 races) in the Trans-Am series Claude proved to be very competitive even with limited funding the team ran in the top 6 on regular basis.

From 2004 to 2008, Claude and Maxime (his son) perfected their car control participating at the CASC ice racing championship in the studded AWD class with a pair of Mitsubishi Eclipse. They where so competitive that they won the class championship during the 2006/2007 season. At the end of the 2008 summer after contemplating the DMCC they acquire a 240sx and did some testing to find out that they where absolutely hook to the drifting world. The extensive preparation of the 240sx with the LS3 engine gives Claude a very strong level of confidence to be competitive in the 2009 season, specially having NormAlexperts Fabrication to prepare and maintain their race machine.

2009 was Claude first Drift season in DMCC he saw 2 podium in his first season including a second place in Toronto and a third place at St-Croix and he clinch the 2009 rookie of the year in the DMCC.

2009 saw Claude qualified second twice, once he qualified fourth on the final round with only one run before his car broke down.

2010 Claude show great potential with his new 350Z convertible and at the second event he qualify 3rd place
The Instructor / Tour Manager

His racetrack performances attracted the attention of John Powell of Powell Motorsport who contacted Claude to drive his cars in some of the previously mentioned series. This led to his becoming Chief Instructor for the Powell Racing/High Performance Driving School from 1987 to 1998.

Claude was responsible for the general operation of the school including advertising, sales, programming and curriculum development. He taught racing drivers, police officers, corporate fleet drivers and other school staff instructors. His bilingual skills enabled him to design and implement French programs and materials and, as a result, he is recognized by the Quebec Ministry of Employment and Solidarity.

Product promotion and product introduction activities include preparation and execution of many cross-country tours for General Motors, Ford and Daimler Chrysler of Canada and several other car manufacturers. Claude designed and implemented driving activities to introduce new vehicles to sales staff, fleet customers and Press members.

Claude has developed his automotive knowledge for the past 25 years from racing expertise to instructing various clients at advanced or high performance driving and their racing tactic, techniques and race craft.

Claude has been involved in product launches at all different level for a wide array of clients for the last 20 years and he is one of the best in the product launches business in North America.

Several other advanced driving/racing/high-performance schools, including the Labatt Road Scholarship, Bridgestone Racing School, Horizon Racing School, the Ferrari Owners Club, the Porsche Drivers Club and the BMW Driver Training, have utilized Claude’s instruction skill.
