For many people the year 2000 was a year to remember as the start of the new millennium, but for Quoc Ly it was the year he will forever remember as the year he first started to fall in love drifting. After learning about drifting from his high school friend Davis Ikemiya, he sought out local enthusiasts from Club4AG and eventually joined them on their common goal to improve their driving skills. Amazingly, Quoc’s first drift car was a 1984 front wheel drive Nissan Sentra. Realizing the cars limited capabilities, he quickly sought after a better format for his learning and the vehicle he found was a 1992 Nissan 240SX coupe. Fueled by the underpowered KA24DE engine, he quickly rose in the ranks at local evens and thus earned himself the title among many as the “KA-KING”.
Several years and tires later, in March of 2005, Quoc was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease, a form of lymph node cancer. Despite being overwhelmed by the after effects from chemo therapy; Quoc’s drive, focus, and sheer determination kept him behind the wheel. A testament to this would be Drivefest, a local competition hosted by Drift Association and Just Drift. Taking place the day after a chemo therapy treatment, Quoc remained consistent throughout the event and took home 1st place. Truly one of many examples of one mans will to overcome life's obstacles, and quite possibly inspiring many alike to overcome their own demons.
